Question
Ethos is a brand of bottled water that makes a specific claim of how it fulfills CSR. According to its website, “Ethos water is a brand with a social mission – helping children around the world get clean water and raising awareness of the World Water Crisis” .
To accomplish this goal, the company donates 5 cents for every bottle sold to fund water programs in developing countries. As many critics have pointed out, however, all is not what it appears to be. While Ethos donates 5 cents per bottle sold, the average price of a bottle is $1.80, 45 cents more than the national average price of a bottle of water (Source: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125167502443470973.html).
Research to find a company that makes a specific claim of a CSR campaign and assess whether or not you think the company is really making a difference and/or contributing to the campaign. In your discussion, provide a brief description of the company’s CSR campaign and your thoughts about the legitimacy of the campaign as well as how they are doing with their campaign. How might Ethos improve its CSR campaign
Explanation / Answer
The company selected is Volkswagen. The company reports that “Volkswagen works towards protection of the environment and contribute to the development of humanity and society in line with VW Group philosophy (Volkswagen, 2016). The company is engaged in 100 or more project that involves working towards environmental causes.
However, the company is engaged in systematic cheating and a culture of corrupt ethics that allowed it to deliberately design software that can circumvent emissions control by accessing the test conditions. This was done to gain unfair advantage.
I think these act open the illegitimacy of the Volkswagen’s CSR campaigns making the CSR efforts as placebo for annual reports and Scooter for attracting the sales and gaining competitive advantage.
