Explanation / Answer

1. I decided to enter the health care profession to help the needy and support them when they require help. Being born in a family of doctors did help my cause and it partially guided me towards going into healthcare. But my interest grew when I could combine it with my sports interest and realized the lack of trained doctors in the sports sector. The three most significant areas which prompted my decision are:

Cause for helping people
Guidance from family
Combining sports interest with professional medicine

2. My dad has been mentor and guided me on the various hardships I had to face during my college days. When I started out as a fresh college student, the studies were too difficult for me and my mind kept wandering over personal interest as compared to studies. My passion for football grew and I began spending more time on the practice field as compared to my classroom or home study area. Due to this change in focus, my grades were affected and I had an honest discussion with my family regarding my future. It was then that I was made to look to through new glasses and found the opportunity in sports sector. I wanted to be involved in football some or other way. Treating players and the sports injuries are different from handling civilian cases. When I was made aware of the opportunity in this area, I could put more focus on this and this helped me to get my grades back up. This also helped me identify the path I want to pursue in future. In addition to this, my dad despite being completely overwhelmed in work has always given me time to talk to me and help me in resolving my personal problems too. He also introduced me to few doctors who were working in sports industry and that has helped me get lot of confidence in my future prospects. Without his help and support I would not have been able to pursue this path and would have probably spent more time practicing football rather than helping the injured players get back on the field.

3. While treating others, I always try to ensure following values are maintained:

Honesty and professionalism –While every patient likes to hear only the positive news, I prefer sharing the honest news slowly and help them in understanding the treatment possibilities. I do not like to linger on actions and keep my professionalism high at all times and take support from others if I am unable to solve certain issues by myself.

Support and education to others – Knowing about a particular injury is hard for any patient but properly educating them to understand the methods involved in resolving them and sharing the success stories of similar cases helps in giving a positive outlook towards the injury. Injuries and illness are frustrating times for any person, but I take my time to plan the entire rehabilitation and methods to prevent them by providing pre and post treatment guidance.

Taking risks and ownership – when I took this role, I found the use of technology was very limited. Going to board and asking them to release funds to upgrade the system was difficult but I took a risk and showed the potential benefits. Making a change in any system is a risk and I had the courage to take this up and own it and ensure the implementation was done properly. The benefits the team receive due to this are beyond explanation.

4. Helping the players get back on the field and watching them do well give more satisfaction. This is one of the most motivating factor that helps me go back to work every day, the push to support inured players get back on their feet and do well and knowing I played a crucial part in the recovery is a big factor. Another area which motivates me is the advent of technology which I can use to monitor, track and treat patients. From keeping lot of manual records to moving to a cloud based platform where the patient files can be accessed on the fly and assisting in implementing the same is a big motivational factor for me. This is also in line with my value of taking ownership and try out new areas and approaches.

5. If I am unable to access the seriousness of the injury or if they player gets injured again during rehabilitation. I faced few issues like this during my early days which has demotivated me to a certain extent. When I give my best effort to treat patient and if the treatment goes bad then I consider this as a personal setback and become critical of the methods I used. While the players themselves did not complain much, I had certain queries on my treatment methods and this had affected me to a certain extent. But as mentioned earlier, having a supportive family helps and having the confidence from coaches and players to get things right. Certain actions taken by leaders can also lessen the commitment to my goals, if they are not supportive in terms of spending on medical equipment’s and treatments then it does become a factor which demotivates the doctors and the medical support staff.

6. During the interview, I will highlight the areas I have improved with new insights and use of data analytics. Most people focus more on past history and records but do not closely monitor the health conditions at the present stage. There are lot of technologies that are available which help in tracking and monitoring the health status of an individual. During my interview I will showcase how I was able to use this effectively in identifying the potential health concerns of the players and plan routine checkups for high risk patients and using health bands I can monitor the support they require. I will also suggest the use of technology to improve the manual work and efficiency involved in routine work among the staff. In case the clinic is maintaining a manual system of records, I will propose an electronic database of health records and inventory of medicines in the clinic. This will help me in tracking the history easily and maintaining the data which can be used by the patients easily. Rather than keeping the data in-house I would propose a platform where the health record can be accessed online easily in case the patient is out of state and need medical attention this will become helpful. As a transformational leader, I would want to use the latest technology to aid the patients’ health and recovery.
