Google has a core belief that the challenges of work should be fun. Therefore, if you give employees the necessary tools to properly perform their job, they will be key contributors to the organization's overall success. When you look at the timeline of the history of management theory and the accompanying historical events that triggered changes in the practice of management. Do you think the Google philosophy of management signals a shift in how work is managed? would you feel comfortable managing in this type of environment?
Past schools of management thought provides the Management a roadmap to future. Most of the theories have taken into consideration all possible scenarios that may exist in the Corporate world, rather, the old Management Gurus have unanimously agreed to the fact that Management is all pervasive. Hence, be it managing the home or an Organization, it is important to comprehend the management theories for better results.
However, it is to be noted that not all the Management theories are still relevant today. Some have evolve over a period of time, while some are not really significant to today’s management style owing to certain different set of challenges that managers of today face in the industry, which is rather different from the ones that those Management Gurus may have recorded during the past time. Google has certainly walked an extra mile in this regard and therefore I feel, Google’s philosophy of management does signal a shift in how work is managed. There is some uniqueness in the way they deal with their employees. The fun quotient in the work is always ensured due to which the employees’ interest in their respective job profile is higher. This in turn ensures job satisfaction for the employees at the workplace of Google.
In relation to the History of the Management theories, there is however, a strong link of the foundation of the theories such as that what was developed by Fredrick Taylor, that holds true even today for the Companies like Google. Fredrick Taylor introduced the scientific management theory by advocating for the scientific principles of management. His theory of scientific management aimed at improving the economic efficiency of the Organizations and was more concerned with the labor productivity. Human resources are rather invaluable assets to the Organization. However, an Organization needs to understand the quantum of break required to rejuvenate this resource and how much time at a stretch needs to be given to the motion or the on-going process of activities that is undertaken by the Human resource. In terms of its current use in Organizations, an appropriate study of this principle, throws light upon how efficiently can the Human resources be handled in order to avail optimum levels of productivity through them. Here, this theory supports today’s understanding of the management concept. Taylor’s differential piece rates plan also holds steady in management.
His principles of time and motion study under the Management theory, is significant at Google. When Google offers necessary tools to their employees to undertake their job in an efficient way, that helps to connect Taylor’s principles even in today’s scenario. All Google does in this regard, is just polish the same, to make it more suitable to the scenario today. The recreation centers at Google’s workplace or the amount of time that an employee needs to dedicate at work, is nothing but complying to the principles of Taylor’s Time and Motion study. Therefore, though it signals a shift in how the work is managed but yet the shift is not very marked one. It is rather a gradual one. I would be glad to manage this type of work environment because the employees shall be satisfied to work in such a scenario. Complains and issues dealing to non-conducive work culture, labor turnover or absenteeism at work, etc. are few of the challenges that could be overcome in a better way while working in the Organization such as Google. Hence I shall be comfortable managing in this type of environment.
