Question
Fire Safety Analysis
Using your current residence as an example, choose one fire hazard (coffee pot, candle, etc.) to analyze within the confines of the Fire Safety Concepts Tree. Discuss the protection mechanisms that are in place to ensure that said fire hazard does not cause a fire, or if it does cause a fire, is confined to its relative area of origin. Be very specific and utilize the terminology in the Fire Safety Concepts Tree.
Hint: Make sure you have looked through NFPA 550.
Papers should be double spaced, Arial font. No minimum length, but be sure to cover the topic in detail.
Explanation / Answer
Let us say that my home is equipped with wet pipe fire sprinkler system as a fire protection defence mechanism. As it is most commonly found, cost effective and has low maintenance. This system is most commonly installed for its simplicity and reliability. These systems are always filled with water and have a short term down time following a fire meaning it activates as soon as it detects the fire. However, Wet pipe systems are not suited for sub-freezing environments as the water in the pipes gets frozen.
Now let us say the fire is caused by a burning curtain or a Christmas tree due to the use of carelessly placed scented candles (Although fire extinguishers are efficient in helping put out small fires, it isn’t the only system that should be on hand to protect the property).
When the smoke detectors catches the smoke from a potential fire the systems sounds the alarm. However, a sprinkler head must detect a temperature between 135 to 165 degrees Fahrenheit and when it does, the sprinkler systems releases the water. The sprinkler systems are to be strategically placed over heat and energy emitting sources. The first and foremost objective of a fire prevention mechanism is to prevent fire ignition. If this is done swiftly and heat energy sources are controlled, this will prove to be effective in preventing an incident.
