Q: What are the three approaches to organizational change? In what ways are they different, and in what ways do they overlap?

A:

Turnaround, tools and techniques, and transformation are the three approaches to organizational change, also known as the "three faces of change".Turnaround focuses on how to better manage the internal resources a company has by either making cuts or additions. MySpace had to make cuts in order to stabilize their cash flow and to immediately improve their financial position. On the other hand, Disney made big investments by updating their adventure park and adding on assets when purchasing Marvel. Both of these companies demonstrated turnover because their reasoning was to improve or ensure short-term, bottom-line performances.

Tools and techniques is another face of change that focuses on what processes help increase internal efficiency. Nike Hewlett-Packard Ford is an example of a company who used a tool of considering a design with an ecological impact before creating a new product instead of after. Doing it before would help increase efficiency and therefore produce a better outcome. This face of change overlaps with the third face of change which is transformation.

Transformation targets employee behaviors to enhance human capabilities. This approach overlaps with implementing a new tool or technique since it is necessary for employees to change some of the behaviors they've been accustomed to. The turnaround also overlaps with transformation since adding-on or getting-rid-of resources demands employees to be open to adjustments being made as well. In order for the change to occur efficiently and for the company to be able to meet their new strategies, employee behaviors will inevitably have to be transformed. For example, I'm sure Disney had to either hire on more staff or update some of their current staff's job description after updating their adventure park. Employees needed to be open to working with new staff or open to having more responsibilities.

Although each of these approaches has different targets, they all have one thing in common in the sense that they are all great options to help renew organizational strategies and objectives.

Q: Identify the main external forces triggering the requirement for organizational change. Pick any three and discuss how they might necessitate behavioral change on the part of organizational employees.

A: Main external forces triggering the requirement for organizational change are:

1. Competition

2. Customers

3. Economy

4. Technology

5. Political and social conditions.

6. Resources.

Looking at the majority of organizations; factors pertaining to their organizational change are heavily dependent upon their ability to compete and maintain their competitive advantage in the market. Having said this, competition from other organizations in their field of expertise, customer satisfaction, economic and technological advancements are but a crucial factor of implementing transformation, a.k.a behavioral change within the company. Employees often do not resist change. They resist the way change is implemented within the organization. In order to smoothly implement the behavioral change, management must come up with a plan of action which works in the favor of both management and the company at large. Introducing the awareness of new era, how their company can compete with the changing requirement of their customers. Implementing new policies and procedures to enhance their capabilities to its full potential should be their target. Training Employees for new technological advancements. Giving them the reason why implementation is important in order to keep up with the economic condition of the country. Involving them to come up with strategies to gain their confidence in the organization will lead to a smooth behavioral change without questioning too much about the status quo.
