Question
On average, out of every 100 eggs laid in large population of starlings, 4 chicks die from acute respiratory problems shortly after emerging from the egg, a genetic disease determined by a single gene. Chicks suffering from the disease have two copies of allele r. The other 96 individuals have at lease one copy of the dominant allele, R, have normal respiratory funtion.
A. Assuming random random mating, estimate q, the frequency of the r allele, among the eggs.
B. Approximmately how many eggs out of 100 will produce heterozygous ("carrier") chicks?

Explanation / Answer
A. The frequency of q can be calculated as square root of q2
Given,
q2= (4/100)
so, q = (.04) 1/2
Therefore, the frequency of r allele, q = .2
B. According to Hardy-Weinberg principle
p+q = 1
p+ .2 = 1
So, p = .8
Calculating number of heterozygous eggs which are given by
2pq --- (1)
substituting values of p and q in (1)
2pq = 2 * .2 * .8
= .32
Therefore, there will be 32 eggs out of 100 that will produce carrier chicks.
