1) Consider your intercultural skills. Write a paragraph discussing your intercultural relationships/experience. As you reflect on the readings, video, and threads shared by your classmates, what are two ideas which struck you as new information? How might these help you gain a greater cultural competence in interpersonal relationships: personal, academic, and professional? 2) Write as second paragraph discussing your collaborative skills. In your paragraph, use the readings to identify your collaborative strengths and weaknesses. Describe at least one way you could improve your skills to become a better team member.
Explanation / Answer
1) Intercultural relationships/experience spans through traveling different countries for work, sharing work goals and practices, meetings conducted with people from different cultural backgrounds, spending time with them and exchanging ideas and information. It is an enriching experience as it gives an opportunity to share beliefs and values of own culture. It is also the opportunity to learn other cultures, their beliefs and practices. There is an opportunity to learn various languages and it improves understanding ability, communication skills and mutual cooperation.
The two ideas found as striking as new information are Cultural diversity has become an integral part of work cultures and Intercultural skills are enriching professional as well as life skills.
These help to gain a greater cultural competence in interpersonal relationships: personal, academic, and professional as it helps in learning flexibility, empathy, creativity and learning. It is a knowledge gaining experience which broadens awareness and understanding.
2) Collaborative skills are an important element of good education. They help in learning ways to behave in society and interact with others. The collaborative skills used by me are acting in a courteous manner as it is the most basic thing to do and create a positive impression. It includes haveing a clear opinion on important issues and openly sharing them with the team. Assertiveness and cultivating cooperative relationships help in building long term relationships. Strengths like taking responsibility and helping others to complete their responsibility and tasks are important. Clear analysis, communication and valuing other's opinions are other important strengths. Weaknesses can be not waiting for a consensus to move ahead and trying to build a common consensus on important matters.
One way of improving collaborative skills is to realize that each team member has a unique strength and ability, recognizing them and ignoring any shortcomings in the process to move ahead. While building consensus every opinion needs to be heard. Identiying any problems and assisting others to sort them for progress is an important collaborative skill based on mutual cooperation.
