Question
how you would apply the methodologies and techniques explained to develop a quality culture in your current or past employment. Make sure to emphasize each of the six values outlined and include an Implementation Plan.
The six values I have identified are:
Value 1: We're all in this together: company, suppliers, customers.
Value 2: No subordinates or superiors allowed.
Value 3: Open, honest communication is vital.
Value 4: Everyone has access to all information on all operations.
Value 5: Focus on processes.
Value 6: There are no successes or failures, just learning experiences.
To better understand these values let's state the opposite of each one. The opposites better characterize the assumptions behind lots of behavior in businesses today.
Value 1: Everyone for him or herself.
Value 2: The boss knows best.
Value 3: Keep communication limited and secretive.
Value 4: Keep most information at the top, and share it only when necessary.
Value 5: Focus on individual work.
Value 6: Success is everything; no tolerance for failure.
Explanation / Answer
My current employment is with a consumer goods company that makes and sells products like shampoos, soaps, lotions and other personal care products on a global basis. To develop a quality culture the outlined six values have to be incorporated in the company’s culture and value system in a tangible manner.
Value 1: This value is based on the notion that organizations are nothing but systems. For a system sum of the parts exceeds the whole and for it to function efficiently all the parts have to work together and in tandem to achieve efficiency and optimality. The sub parts of an organization are its different stakeholders like suppliers, employees, customers etc. All these stakeholders should work in sync to create synergies.
Value 2: This value focuses on the need to eliminate mentality that leads to superior-subordinate relationship. This relationship does exist but when it is not given undue importance then employees start freely expressing their thoughts and notions. This leads to better though process as well as higher level of co-ordination within an organization.
Value 3: Open and honest communication leads to elimination of misunderstandings and creation of higher level of trust among employees. This is based on elements like empathy as well as listening.
Value 4: In today’s digital age when people have ready access to real time information hierarchies do not serve a very useful purpose. Now hierarchy is not needed (unlike earlier times) to dispense information. Technology should be used to give everyone direct access to information and this will lead to increased level of workplace efficiency.
Value 5: My organization has different processes for turning inputs into outputs. It takes inputs like vegetable and animal fats, oils; parabens etc. and turn it into tangible products like soaps. Focusing on processes helps my organization and its stakeholders to understand the importance of teamwork. Focus on processes leads to continuous improvement.
Value 6: Success and failures are passing phases. Organizations and its employees should treat them as learning experiences and should apply these learning to further implement improvements within the organization.
The implementation plan will incorporate all these values for achieving the dual purpose of quality culture creation and quality culture maintenance. Once the quality culture is created an organization should not stop at that. Rather it should work towards the next step of quality culture maintenance. For maintaining the quality culture the commitment of top management will be required.
