The commerce clause was formulated to give exclusive power to Congress over the inter and intra trade activities. The Congress had exclusive rights over the amendments under the commerce clause since its formulation. However, with time, the Supreme Court has tried to regulate the power of the Congress over the regulations and amendments on the Commerce Clause.
A recent limitation on the power of the federal government over commerce clause was done when the Supreme Court made it clear that there is no exclusive rights of the federal government over the commerce clause. The federal government was trying to force the American citizens to buy health insurance mandatorily.
