An disruptive technology is an extension of disruptive innovation originally coined by Clayton Christensen which means developing a novel technology that has potential to develop into a new and unique product or service that brings deep impact on consumer life by creating altogether a new market which has potential to displace an existing market, alter existing standards & systems and also has potential to serve consumers in superior manner.

1. Though there are many examples such as wifi, IOT, AI, criptocurrency etc but LED light could be one disruptive technology that has impacted lives of comman man more strongly than probably any other technology, at least for time being.

2. This is truly a disruptive technology as its advent wrote obituary for years old filament based bulbs across the world.

3. Almost all the companies jumped on the technology and quickly adopted it replacing old products with outdated technology. They have to invest heavily on tooling and redesigning the operations.

4. Many new companies who were not operating in this market gained substantial market share harnessing the early mover advantage when existing companies were deliberating and strategizing the change over. Though few existing such as GE maintained its market position by adapting quickly.

5, This technology has allowed to save millions by cutting the electricity bills for both individuals and corporates. Many developing countries could light dark regions from saved electricity bringing happiness in life of those excluded and living in remote and rural locations. Developed economies could also save resources by reducing electricity generation and protect environment making earth green and safe for coming generations. Consumers gained by getting sharp and better illumination at low cost.
