Q3. Why does the new GE want to treat analytics as a company expertise just as it has always treated material science?
Q4. Using Porter's our generic strategies model, what do you think is the NBA's overall strategy or strategies?
Explanation / Answer
Q. 3)
Jeff Immelt, the CEO of GE, is thoroughly aware of the fact that there is data being generated in all actions of public life. So too, with a large scale industrial production taking place in GE every day, the quantum of data generated is immense. All their major equipment have sensors installed and key places to record all data to check the proper operation of all equipment, especially if they have preciously life associated with it like the blades of an aircraft turbine. Hence, this compiled data is nothing but vital information to improve operations further. Despite being an industrial firm, they are in the business of information and they would share this information with their clients just like an IT firm. Analytics would enable them to take the correct steps to improve their productivity further, it may seem insignificant from a macro view but small improvements based on the information gathered can save their clients’ millions of dollars. Thus, he believes that the next wave of growth is in the industrial internet and as a pioneer in the industrial sector, they can’t be sitting just like that. He admits the fact that he could be wrong but strongly believes that action is any day better than inaction.
Q. 4)
From the Porter’s Generic Strategies model, it quite clearly evident that NBA aims to create a competitive advantage through a Differentiation strategy. With the growing number of mega sports events around the world, NBA intends to maintain or rather grow its fan base and followers further around the globe. Hence, they have partnered with a technology firm Akamai, which delivers websites and web applications to end users across the world with utmost efficiency. NBA wants to ensure that fans around the globe have the same experience as those have it within USA. Akamai acts as an enabler in this as it gives the fans the content they want in a highly efficient and effective manner. With more than 850 million visits from more than 200 countries, NBA aims to create a differentiated offering for its fan-base and take a lead over its counterparts.
