Question

3 4-23. Planning: Assessing Audience Needs; Media Skills: Blogging; Communication Ethics: Making Ethi- cal Choices [LO-3], Chapter 1 Your supervisor has asked you to withhold important information that you think should be included in a report you are preparing. Disobeying him could be disastrous for your working relationship and your career. Obey- ing him could violate your personal code of ethics. What should you do? On the basis of the discussion in Chapter 1, would you consider this situation to be an ethical dilemma or an ethical lapse? Explain your analysis in a brief email message to your instructor.

Explanation / Answer

In such a case, a one-to-one discussion can be conducted with the supervisor to understand his viewpoint and thought process behind not including the critical information in the report. If the supervisor is not able to give a valid reply and the action does not seem justified, the supervisor can be bypassed and his immediate boss can be consulted regarding the same.

This situation is a great example of ethical dilemma. Ethical lapse happens when a person failed to behave ethically. Ethical dilemma occurs when an individual is stuck in a situation in which all way outs seem unethical.
