Assignment Overview and Learning Objectives
Persuasive messages are common in business, and this assignment asks you to apply what you have learned about the process of writing persuasive messages to a particular scenario.
Preparation
Before starting this assignment, please complete the following:
Read the textbook chapter on persuasive messages closely, paying particular attention to examples. I have posted two of the examples from the textbook on Blackboard.
Watch the video lecture on writing persuasive messages available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFdCzN7RYbw (the link is also posted on Blackboard).
Make sure you understand the following:
When and how to use the direct and indirect plans in persuasive messages
How to apply the AIDA format for persuasive messages written using the indirect plan
How to personalize a persuasive message for a specific target audience
How to use and balance ethos, pathos, and logos in persuasive messages
How to justify your proposal and deal with potential obstacles
How to ask for specific actions in closing
Scenario
Imagine that you recently purchased a car dealership in Columbus, Ohio. After three months of working at the facility, you realize that you have much to learn. You would like to visit the dealership in Dayton, Ohio—one of the highest-producing operations in the company. You’ll need approval from the regional director, Jarissa Jones, who manages several dealerships in the Midwest. Most of your communication with Jarissa has been by email, so you decide to send an email to her with this request.
Before you write the email, you may find it helpful to consider the following questions:
Ms. Jones is your superior in the company. Should you use the direct or the indirect plan in your message? (Hint: in general, for upward communication, you should use the direct plan.)
How will you capture attention? How will you clearly and concisely describe your request?
What are some benefits of your idea to yourself and the company?
What potential objections might Ms. Jones have? How would you address these while subordinating them to the benefits?
How will you use and balance ethos, pathos, and logos in your email?
What specific actions would you like Ms. Jones to take after she reads your email?
(Please see the next page.)
Assignment
Compose the email to Ms. Jones in a document. You will need to invent some of the trip details. Follow the format outlined below:
To: (create a fictitious email address)
From: (insert your email address)
Subject: (compose a heading that will capture Ms. Jones’ attention)
Date:
Dear Ms. Jones:
In the introductory paragraph, present your recommendation clearly and concisely, and provide a brief rationale. Make sure that this opening paragraph captures the audience’s attention.
In the body paragraph(s), justify your recommendation. Remember to focus on the audience. Explain how your proposal will benefit the audience, either directly or indirectly. Address any potential objections. Use ethos, pathos, and logos as you develop the body paragraph(s). Use an objective, logical, reasonable, and sincere tone.
In the conclusion paragraph, ask for the action you would like your audience to take. End on a forward-looking note, continuing to stress reader benefits.
Sincerely,
Your name

Subject: Dealership to a Long Lasting Relationship
Date:15-Sep-2018
Dear Ms. Jones:
It gives me immense pleasure to write you this email with a sense of True Gratification of achieving something in my life with a great support from you!
Without your wholehearted support and stepping out while walking an extra mile for me, this would have been not possible.
Today, I stand in front of my Family and community as a Proud & successful owner of the Ferd Car Dealership in Columbus, Ohio.
Unlike the previous times, I am not going to come to you with a problem but truly wanted to say THANKYOU for your Support and Guidance!!
Having said about the feeling I have today, about the success of opening and running the Dealership, I also see that my hunger to success is increasing.
I can see also understand that the Hunger in you should be much higher, as you run and manage a series of Dealerships in the Midwest and particularly the Dayton one, which is in the news for all the right reason on being the top producing ones in the region.
While I was wondering about how difficult it would have been for you to manage all these successful dealerships, I was wondering about actually visiting and feeling the high energy that are running in these dealership.
That reminds me of your words, long ago, when you indeed encouraged me, in the beginning days, to check and hear how successful these dealerships were and I strongly believe, and definitely know that you as well would agree. That, this could be the right time to take a look at the Dayton, Ohio dealership and learn a lot on how to be more and more successful like you all are!!
This idea that came in, doesn’t let me sleep and wanted to convey my desire, which would definitely lead to a series of positive actions within myself and my dealership!
Just like every day and time, would expect your support and co-operation and as well as your approval to visit the Dayton, Ohio site to learn and understand the next level of business management, strategy, work style and how to be more successful and cheerful like you all and would like to travel on your success path and take the Dealership into a long lasting relationship!!
With a positive outlook, requesting your approval and looking forward to meet you all, at Dayton.
Sincerely,
Jim
