This person may be someone you know (relative, friend, teacher, minister or colleague) or someone you don't know (activist, celebrity, scholar, doctor, etc.) - famous or not famous.

Explain why you think this person is or was a Global Citizen - what did or do they do to mobilize change? Was it effective? How did or does it impact society? At what scale, local, state, national, regional, global?

Explanation / Answer

The person whom I think of as a Global Citizen is Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and he was the President of South Africa during the period 1994 to 1999.

The key reason why I think Mr. Mandela to be a Global Citizen was that he made a significant positive impact on the world with regards to the issue of apartheid. Apartheid was a system of institutionalized racial distinction and differentiation in which the Blacks and the minorities were repressed and the white population was given all forms of social benefits. Nelson Mandela led the anti-apartheid movement and showed the world in general and South Africa in particular that human beings belonging to different races can live together in harmony without repressing any particular race. He educated the world about the baseless premise on which racial distinction and differentiation is done. He taught the world that people from different races can live together in a reconciled atmosphere in which there are no human right abuses.

To mobilize change Mr. Mandela used his ideology to change perceptions of people across the world that people from different races cannot live together in harmony and that one race is superior to other races. He drove home the point that all human beings are born equal and hence have the fundamental rights to be treated equally and at par at different walks of their lives.

Yes, Mr. Mandel’s effort was effective and it did have a significant impact on the society. The efforts of Mr. Mandela were more profound at the national level as it led to the abolition of the apartheid movement in South Africa. At the global level the efforts of Mr. Mandela taught people the need and importance of living in an inclusive society and making the society less discriminating to people of different class and race.
