Question
How many ATP can we make from glyceral. Explain Why? I know we make 4ATP, which results in the gain of toATP. But how do we make 4 ATP, is it because of the 2 3-carbonmolecules each underago the the forming of 2 atp, which makes4. Can someone explain/tell me if I am right. The net yield of of 2ATP's is right but I'm afraid of your explanation. The number of ATP'sgenerated when one glycerol molecule enters glycolysis is only2 This is because, glycerol enters glycolysis as DHAP. For this glycerol has tobe first phosphorylated to glycerol-3-phosphate by kinaseenzyme which requires 1 ATP. glycerol-3-phosphate thenreduced to DHAP by the enzyme dehydrogenase. These two reactions occurin mitochondria. Glycerol enters glycolysisas DHAP and this glycolysis occurs in cytosol. The DHAP is isomerized toglyceraldehyde-3-phosphate which then follows the path ofglycolysis. 1,3-bisphoglycerate isformed from glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate. By substrate levelphosphorylation, an ATP is formed and 1,3-bisphoglycerate isconverted to 3-phosphoglycerate. 3-phosphoglycerateis converted to 2-phosphoglycerate which is thenconverted to phosphoenolpyruvate. By second substrate levelphosphorylation, the second ATP is formed during theconversion of phosphoenolpyruvate to pyruvate. Fron the above we cansay that 2 ATP's are generated. If 2 glycerol moleculesenter glycolysis then we can say that 4 ATP's are released, but asonly 1 glycerol has entered only 2 ATP's aregenerated. As the conversion ofglycerol to glycerol-3-phosphate occurs in mitochondria we need notsubstract the ATP's. Hence only 2ATP's are formed when 1 glycerol enters glycolysis.Related Questions
