Explanation / Answer

Purpose of a performance improvement plan

The first reason for PIP is to identify substandard performance of an employee and help him recognize that his performance isn't meeting expectations. Plans are tailored to address specific performance deficiencies an employee is exhibiting. The plan offers a way to develop a systematic improvement program, which may comprise formal coaching or on-the-job training.

The next reason for a PIP comprises gathering the information necessary to document substandard performance. Employers aren't always in a position to know the exact strengths and weaknesses a certain employee is exhibiting. A good strategy may be to design a plan that documents performance over a given period of time.

The next reason for a PIP centers around the concept of helping employees realize their own potential. Even though an employee has been showing substandard performance, the plan can help the employee improve on the skills he already has and show how he can obtain new ones.
