Question

please provide an objective function (one from the text or one of your own creation). Then explain what each coefficient means, being sure to explain where they came from and why they might be subject to change.

For example, think back to the golf bag problem first introduced in Chapter 2. That problem had an objective function of 10S + 9D, a function that related to profits per each product (and one that we therefore wanted to maximize). The 10 and 9 were coefficients. They came from an accountant at the firm who had data that showed each of the standard bags yielded $10 of profit while each of the delux bags generated only $9. Either or both of these coefficients might change (perhaps drastically) in the future if, for example, the cost of the labor or raw materials that went into the bags rose. This could easily happen as a result of labor contracts being renegotiated or a supply shortage tied to a labor dispute at one or more factories.

Explanation / Answer

Answer:

The objective function for the problem is:

Maximize Profit = P = 10S + 9D

Here $10 is profit on standard bags and $9 is profit on delux bags

S is number of standard bags.

D is number of delux bags.
