it is also called gulf of mexico oil spill of 2010, largest marine oil spill in history. this was caused by on april 20, 2010, explosion on the deepwater horizon oil rig, situtaed in the gulf of mexico, 41 miles (66km) off th coast of loisiana and it subsequent sinking on april 22.
the deepwater horizon rig drilling int0 the macondo oil field a mile deep in the gulf of mexico exploded and sank. eleven workers on the rig were killed. the collapse of the rig and drill pipe umleased the largest marine oil spill in history 4.9 million barrels (207 millions gallons), only about 50 miles southeast of the mississippi river delta.
