Please organize your thoughts based on the order in which questions are asked. Scenario summary A marketing executive, of a major corporation, needs to hire a new staff member to fill a position that has been just created. The marketing executive asked the human resource department to help identify three possible candidates from inside the organization. The marketing executive met with each of these people and thoroughly reviewed their educational backgrounds, experience, performance appraisals, career path, and other qualifications and eliminated one person because of lack of fit. The marketing executive now faces a complicated decision between the two because he or she sees them as relatively equal in terms of potential. The real problem, however, is diversity and equal opportunity One candidate is an African-American female. The marketing executive is personally committed to equal opportunity for minorities and has a reputation for helping members of protected classes whenever appropriate The candidate has received appraisals consistently in the range of 3.8-4.2 on the firm's 5-point scales. But because the marketing executive knows that her boss rates everyone on the low side-in his or her opinion, about 0.4 below where others would rate them. The other candidate is white male. This individual's performance appraisal have been in the range of 4.0-4.4 range, and the marketing executive knows the candidate's boss and believes that these scores are accurate as his boss always does a fair, objective, and equitable job in her performance appraisals The marketing executive has the authority to make this decision, but wants to make sure he or she can defend it in the event that the individual not selected questions how and why he or she chose the other individual for the position. Questions 1. What is the difference between Performance Appraisal and Performance Management? 2pts 2. Discuss at least one ethical issue in this situation? 2pts 3. Identify and discuss 2 arguments for selecting each candidate? 6pts For the African-American female For the white male:Explanation / Answer
Answer:- Performance management can be seen as the process of identifying, evaluating , managing and developing he performance of the manpower in the organization. On the other hand, performance appraisal is the activity of evaluating the real performance of the employees on a regular basis so that corrective measures can be taken to improve the performance.
Answer:- The ethical dilemma in this case is whether to be fair while deciding in favor of any candidate or to promote the candidate from minority as the policy of the firm which can result in unfair selection for the white candidate. If we look closely, the white candidate is having better ratings than the other and thus he should be selected but as the philosophy of the company is to provide opportunities to those who belong to minorities, will also create an ethical dilemma.
Answer:-
For African American Female:-
Being a female the candidate is already at a disadvantageous position in the society and at the employment due to gender discrimination but as the candidate is from Afro-American background thus will further reduce her chances in the employment, Thus the company should provide her an opportunity as she can prove her ability and skills and this will also help in uplifting both the female and the minority in the society or at the employment.
As the boss of this candidate gives a very strict ratings, thus she also has similar rating as of white male thus the decision should be in her favor as she can perform well
For White male:-
Belonging to a majority community should not be a basis on which the candidate should be rejected. The selection decision should be based purely on the experiences, rating from the ex-boss, qualification rather than on the basis of race.
It is the number which matters the most rather than the perception or notion. In comparison to the African American Female, this white male has better rating and thus the decision should be based on ratings and other measures.
