Exercise #10-Motivation at Work Due Wednesday January 24th 2017 at 11:59PM GOAL: To increase your understanding of the importance of motivating employees in the workplace in order to influence them in meeting company's goals INSTRUCTIONS: Using your knowledge about the importance of ethics in motivating employees provide an educated response to the questions based on the scenario below. Please organize your thoughts based on the order in which questions are asked. Opening Case: Getting Engaged at Work The question is what comes first, happiness in your work or productivity in your work? According to Alexander Kjerulf founder of Spoing, a Danish consulting firm, happiness at work is the number one productivity booster. Several reasons are given in support of Alexander's idea including happy people work better with others, fix problems rather than complaining about them, and make better decisions. Kjerulf believes the link of causation is strongest from happiness to productivity. However Paul Larson, who is a veteran of operations management in various industries, claims it is productivity, which leads to happiness. He suggests that in order for companies to boost worker productivity they should train and support their mangers in their efforts to keep the workers engaged. Pepperdine University's behavioral psychologist, Charles Kerns agrees it is engagement that is the best goal for managers who want to influence the happiness level of workers. And so, just like the debate over which came first, the chicken or the egg, the debate over which comes first, happiness in your work or productivity in your work, continues Some experts argue that you have two basic options about your job: be happy with the job you have or find a different job.
