Although there are some international operations that use similar decision making norms irrespective of the country of operation, but it is true that the decision-making philosophies and practices would differ from country to country. The decision making philosophy and practices is affected by several factors including the culture, values, attitude, behavior and thinking of people.
For example, in some countries the top managers lack trust and confidence in their middle level managers, therefore, they tend to make centralized decisions without involving the middle level managers in the decision making process. Contrary to this, in some countries the decision making process is decentralized and inputs from middle level managers are also taken into account while making the decisions.
In addition to it, decision making philosophy also depends upon the objective of the organization. People from some countries do not give importance to their employees and only focus on improving productivity and quality of goods/services delivered by them. Contrary to this, some companies focus on providing work life balance to its employees and give importance to their individual needs.
The consensus decision making process in Japan is completely different from that of other countries and is considered to be very complicated. They use two facts while conducting the decision making process namely “tatemae” and “honne”. Here “tatemae” refers to the things that is right as per the norm, whereas “honne” refers to the things that an individual wants to do. Generally, they tend to prioritize other’s expectations over theirs. It helps in saving time and effort invested in the decision making process.
