1. Cognition, as it relates to behavior organizations, is based upon human thinking and helps in explaining human behavior. The theory of organizational behavior states that behavior is tied to thinking. In simple words cognition is a mental process that is involved in thinking. The process consists of different elements like attending to a piece of information, processing that information, and analyzing that to create a meaning. This will, in turn, enable one to act, learn and perform other required and essential activities within an organization.

2. Perceptions lead to variations in the observations being made by people. Perceptions also can positively or negatively influence the attention process by affecting the values, knowledge and assumptions within an organization.

Biases leads to judgment shortcuts. This is because human beings have a limited capacity to process information. Biases are used to simplify the decision making process but on the flipside it leads to long term creation of systematic biases. This negatively affects judgments and hence organizational behavior in the long run.

Expectancy theory is based on outcome expectancy. Motivation plays a key role in shaping organization behavior and managers should shape and enhance motivation of employees by giving them valued outcomes on the successful completion of tasks.

Schemes and mental models are mental representation of an individual’s general knowledge and his/her expectations. Person schemas, role schemas and event schemas are used to simplify information processing. Mental models are images about how the world works. These images are deeply held by an individual and hence affect organizational behavior just like expectancies and schemas.

Sensemaking includes those processes which are used by organizations to make plausible interpretation with regards to different situations that are equivocal. Sensemaking affects organizational behavior as it focuses on how employees go about dealing with alternative interpretations to come to a conclusion or understanding.

3. Health care managers can facilitate shared understanding by (i) examining and testing mental models and assumptions (ii) reduction of bias through communication that is collective and skillful. Problem solving will also come into picture when reducing bias. For example managers can share mental representations and beliefs. (iii) creating a common and single identity that puts focus on shared vision for the future of the organization and its employees.

4. Learning about the role of cognition organizational behavior has given me an understanding about how mental models, thinking and perceptions (together with other thinking patterns) play a significant role in the field of organizational behavior. I have learnt that in future, as a manager, I will have to make efforts to bring the employees together so that they develop a shared understanding and this will support and enhance collective action within the organization.
