Question
Use the GVV aproach to solve how Mike could have dealt with this situation and voiced his values:
Mike is the assistant coach of a soccer team. Just before the team's final game of the season, Mike and his fellow coaches learned that the team's best player had gotten in disciplinary trouble at school. The team needed needed to win this game in order to make the playoffs. If this player did not play the game, they would most likley not win the game.
The player was not suspended so technically, under school rules, she was allowed to play in the game. The choice was up to the head coach. The team's head coach, who was much older and more experienced than Mike, wanted the player to play the game. Although Mike knew that the team probably needed this player to win the game, Mike did not agree with the head coach's decision. Mike felt that this player needed to learn responsibility but to the head coach, it was simple: the team needed the player to win the game and that was all that matters to him. Ultimately, Mike did not voice his values: he chose to remain silent.
Explanation / Answer
GVV approach focuses upon the values, rather giving attention to the ethical analysis. Under the GVV approach, the questions are raised and the answers are found out as the value driven course of action. In the given scenario, the best player is in disciplinary trouble, but she was not suspended. Then, the first question, Mike is to raise is, what is the nature of disciplinary issue and does it amount to the suspension? With the answers of minor disciplinary issue and its being of non footballing reasons, the player should play the game and other action should be taken to discipline the player. It will make no any compromise with the value and Mike can take the decision of playing the player.
If the answer is a serious disciplinary issue, that is of footballing reasons and it will affect the morale of other players. Then, Mike should follow the values and should raise his voice to not to select the player. Mike can prepare the reasons such as negative moral as the after effect, spreading of the disciplinary issues among the other layers as well as the follow of unethical means to select the player. It may convince the head coach. Least, it will help Mike to know that he followed his values.
