You should be familiar with the process of working with human subjects and the importance of gaining informed consent when conducting primary research. Throughout history there have been many cases where research was not conducted ethically, resulting in serious consequences. One of the most famous examples of unethical researcher conduct is the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment. Watch this short YouTube video “Research Ethics involving Human Subjects” hosted by Delton Daigle (9:38). Next, conduct an internet search to find and read about another example of unethical researcher conduct. Write a summary of the case your find explaining what happened and why it was unethical (150 words). At the end of your summary provide a web link so your instructor and classmates can read more about the case you selected.

Explanation / Answer

In another series of such experiments conducted on human beings mostly without their consents, that involved the use of radiations on the subjects, most of them powerless and vulnerable, from deprived sections of the society. The experiments were conducted over decades, starting around 1940 in which the subjects were injected with the radiations to observe the absorption and retention of these elements in the human body, using them as guinea pigs and calibration devices. The study, termed as Manhattan project was an effort to study the effects of radiations on the human body, so that the workers can be protected from it. Though the intentions were good, the methodology was grossly unethical. It is believed that most of the patients were not aware what they were subjected to, the potential ill effects of the exposure. Barring one or two cases, no consent was received from the subjects.
