Compare and contrast the three components of an attitude:
Attitude refers to the judgement of an individual towards a particular event, person, or object. There are three components of attitude including cognitive, affective, and behavioral components. Cognitive component refers to the opinion segment of attitude. The affective component refers to the emotional segment of an attitude. Behavioral component refers to the intention of an individual to behave in a particular manner.
Relationship between attitudes and behavior:
As explained above, attitude refers to the judgement of an individual towards a person, object, or any situation. Whereas, behavior refers to the way in which we respond towards a situation or a person/object. There is a strong relationship between attitudes and behavior. Behavior of an individual towards a situation or person is guided by his/her attitude. Hence, attitudes helps in easily predicting our behavior. Situations when personality and behavior of an individual do not match or contradict with each other, then it would result in cognitive dissonance.
Example of situation where job attitudes directly influenced the behavior of an individual:
In day to day life, we experience different situations in which job attitude of an individual directly affects his/ her behavior. Consider the example of job satisfaction. Job satisfaction refers to the positive feeling of an individual towards his/ her job. If a person has higher degree of job satisfaction, he/ she would be more motivated to perform the tasks and show higher productivity. Consider another job attitude i.e. job involvement, which refers to the psychological identification of an individual with his job. If a person has higher degree of job involvement, then he/she would give their best efforts to complete the job in best possible manner.
Main causes job satisfaction:
Job satisfaction refers to the positive feeling that a person holds about his/ her job. It depends upon the evaluation of an individual towards the characteristics of a job. Main causes of job satisfaction are: pay rate and benefits offered to an individual helps in increasing their job satisfaction up to a certain level. Similarly, personality of an individual also affects his job satisfaction. People having positive self-evaluation are generally more satisfied with their jobs as compared to those having negative self-evaluation.
Three outcomes of job satisfaction:
The most likely three outcomes of job satisfaction will be- 1) High employee performance and productivity, 2) Helps in reduction of absenteeism and employee turnover, 3) Job satisfaction also helps in enforcing organizational citizenship behavior and improving customer satisfaction.
Employee responses to job dissatisfaction:
Most likely employee responses to job dissatisfaction are – 1) Employee might try to improve conditions by discussing the problems with their supervisors and suggesting solutions, 2) Employee might show loyalty and wait for the conditions to improve, 3) He might neglect his duties and responsibility and show increased absenteeism and lateness, 4) Employee might leave the organization.
