Question
Imagine you are a candidate for the White House and present to the class at least one executive action you would take on your first day serving as president.
Go beyond just stating what the executive order you would make is. Make an argument supporting your action. Is it a legal action? Does the president have the power to take this action without Congress? Is this really a state issue and not a federal issue? Is this executive action, in your opinion, a good idea, why or why not? Would the public be in favor of such an executive action?
Explanation / Answer
On my first day as the president, my first action to execute would be closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp that is located in Cuba. This detention camp has inmates detained without trial and most of them have been tortured in an attempt to extract information from them unlawfully. The camp abuses the human rights of American citizens and has brought terror to the inmates where many have committed suicide and also to their families who have no idea where their family members disappeared to. This camp is taken as a major breach of the basic human rights and as a president; I would have to stop it.
The Guantanamo bay does not consider the basic human rights. Closing it would be a legal action with evidence that inmates are tortured, denied freedom of food and let to stay in dark and filthy places without legal trial. The president has no complete power to close it as it requires the support of the congress to pass a bill that allows its closure. In essence, it is a federal case as the Federal government makes use of to extract information from people believed to be terrorists or those who have committed grave federal crimes. The closure of this bay is a good idea as the inmates should have a right to plead their cases. The public would be in favor of these actions as there are courts that can handle these kinds of issues. Additionally, the public cannot support such a grave breach of human rights.
