Question
There are a number of project management software packages on the market, most of them perform with reasonable competence in the task of which they were design. However, they vary in their specialty, cost, risk and report generation.
You are the project manager of a team of software specialist working on a project to produce a piece of application software in the field of project management. How would you justify the selection of a particular software to others on the market? Give some examples of things that might go wrong on such a project and the sort of trade-offs you might have to make.
Explanation / Answer
The selection of a software should be advocated by the following reasons:
1. Demand in the market.
2. Potential customer availability as per the requirement match with the service done by the software.
3. Benefit derived by others (required for sales pitch).
4. Faster project time and desired dashboard formation, using the facilities provided by the software.
Some potential failure points could be:
1. Mismatch of your expectation and customer expectation from the same product. Once purchased, in order to reach the breakeven point, you need to put in efforts to get customer, if at all your estimate fails.
2. Over estimation of customer base depending on the marketing stint by the software company. In this cae you need to keep your resources deployed with the newly purchased software.
3. Un-trained people or difficulty in adaptability by your resources. Additional training investment needs to be done.
