One skill that I have attained in my life that I am good at is fishing. I consider myself good at fishing because whenever I go fishing I either catch a lot of fish or several fish that are of good size. This is true for the multiple species of fish that I fish for like bluegill, largemouth bass and catfish. One example of this is when me and my dad went fishing for bluegill and caught over 100 bluegills and most of them weighed close to a pound. Most bluegill people catch are at public ponds where they don’t even get over half a pound. Another example of why I think I am skilled at fishing is when I caught almost 30 lbs worth of catfish in an hour. Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my dad and others fishing in the spring and summer. We would be out on the water for hours trying different techniques to figure out the best ways to catch a lot of fish. By spending a lot of time fishing and a lot of patience, I got to where I would consider myself skilled at fishing.

I go fishing with one of my friends and show him some of my techniques during the summer when our families go on vacation at the same time. We would spend the mornings and part of the afternoon using my dad’s and my fishing technique and would catch more than he would using his way. We did is this way because experience is the best teacher. My friend now uses my fishing techniques all the time. Being successful in fishing relies heavily on a couple of ideas. Some of them are being patient and persistence. One can’t always expect fish to bite immediately. So, the lessons of being patient and persistent have made an impact on my life currently so as not to get to carried away and rush things. I think this will continue on after college where there are more distractions and stressful situations occur that the lessons learned from fishing may be applicable. On top of that, I will take time out of my schedule to go fishing for as long as I am able to fish.

I believe that I am good at data analytics. Any form of data, large or small, tidy or untidy, when comes to me, it always motivates me to analyze it thoroughly. One reason behind this skill is my affection towards mathematics and statistics which had grown long ago at my secondary school level. After that, in the high school level, I had the opportunity to study statistics, both descriptive and inferential. The high score in the exams in mathematics and statistics were also reasons for my skill development in this domain.

My assertion that I am good in this area is based on several facts. Whenever I have taken any subject which required any amount of computational part, I have succeeded in the exam. In my professional experience also, people used to rely on the estimates and forecasts made by me with the available data and the tools at disposal. I was in production and operation of a large automobile manufacturer's plant where I had the opportunity to inculcate this particular with the data from the existing IT system. In my professional tenure, I have developed several data models using these raw data which had led to tremendous efficiency improvement in the workplace.

I have shared some of my skills with my colleges, peers, subordinates, and superiors in many forums. These forums include formal presentations, training sessions, and informal discussions. I have noticed that people are not equally conversant in mathematics and data analysis techniques and need different approaches to learn. I have adopted some of my own methods and modules (which I have developed over a period of time) to make complete statistical theories into lucid forms so that people having trouble with mathematics can also learn.

At present, I am looking for opportunities to learn data science in a rigorous way. I have completed the initial level of work through some of the online courses. For this, I learned some of the programming languages like R and Python. I want to make data science a part of my career so that my passion and career match. I am exploring further opportunities to enroll myself in a degree, diploma, or certification in data science for the future.
