from Organization Development Edition 4 by Donald L. Anderson

"I'm glad you're here, and I have something important to discuss with you. Have a seat." Seth Burke had been called to Michelle Greenfield's office. Just 18 months ago, Michelle had accepted the role of chief learning officer at TLG Solutions a fast-growing provider of global human resources software for Fortune 1000 companies. Seth and Michelle had worked together in a previous company, and Copyrighted mat now that Seth was working as an independent external organization development consultant, Michelle was anxious to make use of his skills. "Hev, I was really glad to get your call. It's been too long," Seth exclaimed as he took a seat at a round table in Michelle's office while Michelle closed the door. TLG Solutions headquarters was located in a six-story building just outside of downtown in a suburban area for expanding technology companies. Michelle's office had a panoramic view of the lake. "What great scenery," Seth added. "How long has the company been in this location?"

Explanation / Answer

Data collection is the process of gathering information in a systematic manner in order to get the answer for the problems associated with the data. Data can be collected in many ways like interview, questionnaire, observations, unobstrutive measures etc.

To get to know more about the problems the consultant needs to know the goals of the client. what the client wants at the end? from the above case study we have come to know that Michelle Greenfield the Chief Learning officer at TLG Solutions wants to create an effective company, wants to reduce the costs in the training, launch successfully new products and services and most importantly improve the overall training department which is under her. once the goals are known the consultant needs to know about the problems, this can easily be known through data gathering. The data shows that the products are not working as they are promised to, sales people are making false promises and selling products which dont have those features just to make the sale, lot of money is spent on the training but no results can be seen.etc

The data for the above underlying problems can be achieved by having a detailed interview with the team leaders of the regions and design team . The data should first be collected from the team leaders of the regions regarding what techniques or strategies are working in their region and which are not. (showing substantial evidence why it did not work and which one did work) on receiving the data a discussion between the design team and regional heads will lead to the solution of the problem by working together on creating a customised training module for each region.
