Question

Consumers today want pork with less fat and more muscle than they did 50 years ago. Identifying genes that promote muscle mass and growth is critical in producing larger, leaner pigs. In a cross between European wild boars that averaged 200 lbs and domestic white Yorkshire's that averaged 500 lbs a group of pigs that averaged 350 lbs were produced. When two of the F1 pigs were crossed, a range of body weights were produced, from 200 lbs to 500 lbs. 2500 offspring were produced. Of these, 3 had body weights of about 500 lbs; 2 had body weights of about 200 lbs.

A) How many allelic pairs are involved in determining body weights?

B) Approximately how much does each additive gene contribute to the phenotype?

C) What would be a possible genotype for a pig weighing 350 lbs?

Explanation / Answer

the study which involve in the studying the genes with complexity is through quantitaive genetics . the genes are located for the muscle mass in pigs are called qunatitaive trait loci in pig it is located in chromosome 2 , which has insulin like growt h factor which is responsible for the groth of muscle mass in pigs . the gene present in the pig is polygeneic many genotypes may influence the phenotype of the individual . it is studied under polygenic inheritance

a. How many allelic pairs are involved in determining body weights?

answer;   two alleles for each pair {BB]

b.Approximately how much does each additive gene contribute to the phenotype

answer ; one additive allele means which is able to promote the muscle growth , if we take parents to be one homozygous don t promote muscle growth { non -additive] and other parent is homozygous for muscle growth is ,approximatly one additive gene for contribution of the one type phenotype   then there will be 50;50 chances of producing additve genes and non additive genes . the greater the number of additive genes greater is the phenotype . it can be determined with n -number of genes responsible , if we take n =2 , then phenotypic expression will be 2n+1 =   5 types of phenotypes are seen

c.What would be a possible genotype for a pig weighing 350 lb

it will be hetrozygous and have a additve gene the genotype cane be BB homozygous for muscle growth
