Question

ERP and MRP are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.

As a starting question, what functions does ERP have that MRP does not have?

To make this question more easy to approach, think about the video about Tecsew in the readings on MRP/ERP. What additional benefits would Tecsew get if it also implemented ERP functions over and above the operational benefits yielded from its MRP implementation?

(Finally, as a subtle (& rather difficult) question would MRP in practice have benefits which ERP does not have?)

Explanation / Answer

ERP is the backbone of MRP.ERP includes all system across an organization while MRP is more specific.ERP covers customer relationship management, scheduling operations, keeping inventory records and financial data, defining business processes and ensuring they are complied with throughout the supply chain.MRP doesn’t provide access to all these at once. However through MRP one can have more control over the manufacturing process without indulging into full integration under ERP.
