Week 9 Discussion

Ethics and Trust in Critical Thinking Decisions

1. Imagine you're thinking about buying a new car. Before making this important decision, you'll want to gather as much information as possible to help make the right choice. Determine the level of trust that you would place in information provided by the following sources: a salesman at the car lot, the dealer Website, social media (i.e. Facebook), an associate from work, and a close friend. Discuss the key factors involved in assessing the amount of trust that you put into each source.

2. Imagine you're in a position to persuade another person. You sincerely believe that your position is 100% right. Explain whether or not you would slant information in such a way as to make your point(s) seem more credible. Discuss the primary ethical dilemmas that this scenario could cause for both you and the person whom you are trying to persuade.

Explanation / Answer

The level of trust I would place in information provided by the sources are:

-Salesman at car lot: The sole purpose of his job is to sell the car, hence he will only talk about the positive things and may give false hopes to the customer, therefore the level of trust on him would be 'minimum' or zero.

-Dealer website: This being the website of the dealer will also point out at positive aspects of the products and may contain incorrect information as to promote his sales, hence level of trust here would also be 'minimum'.

-Social media: Such as Facebook can be used to view reviews and comments of people for the products to give a better idea about it, but also here due to high demographics and opinions of people, there will be mixed reviews, hence level of trust will be moderate.

-An associate from work: He will give a better review as he knows your preference you told him, but he may also take the advantage of trust and deceive you with wrong choice, hence the level of trust would be moderate.

-Close friend: He will give you the information upto his best knowledge and as he knows that personally he can give better opinions and choices in terms of finance also and family considerations, hence level of trust would be high.

2. If I believe that my position to persuade another person is 100% right, then I will slant information in a way to seem as more credible to him because I have the confidence of persuading him, it improves the trust of the other person regarding that information so he may not be in a doubt, also it would save time in confronting him.

Ethical dilemmas that it could cause for me is that I may feel guilty of the information turns out to be wrong, it may lower out trust levels if he finds out about it.

For the other person, the ethical dilemmas can be the whether to have trust on me or to check the facts.
