Question

We are seeing that the theories of James, Cattell and Dewey were instrumental in developing functional psychology in America. James was a pragmatist as we have read in our text. This means that he wanted to emphasize the results more than the methods. Pragmatism is derived from American philosophy. He believed that mental and physical experiences are different aspects of the same experience. Dewey's thoughts on psychology were along the same lines as James. As a proponent of functionalism he thought that results were the most important thing. Did Cattell follow this same thought process or was his different?

Explanation / Answer

Cattell did not follow in the lines of James and Dewy. He stressed the importance of methodology. He has developed mental tests.
