Question

As a new manager you are now responsible for hiring everyone in your department. While you may have gone through many interviews on the other side of the desk (as the job candidate), interviewing others is a process that should not be undertaken lightly nor conducted without adequate training on the do’s and don’ts of interviewing – or you could legally compromise yourself and create undue legal risk for your health care organization.

To ensure interviews won’t cross into what I call “don’t go there territory,” consider creating a list of questions you plan to ask every candidate, and make sure you understand the questions you should NOT ask.

This week 's homework assignment contains a list of 25 questions that have been asked during past interviews. Review the list and determine if the question can be asked or avoided during an interview with a potential employee that you’re looking to hire.

Write either Avoid or Ask next to each question that you believe can legally be asked or avoided during an interview.

For example: “I love that cross necklace that you’re wearing. To which church do you belong?” “You may not ask any questions about an applicant’s religious preference, denomination, church, parish, pastor, or religious holidays observed,” warns Jackson. “Stay away from these questions entirely.”
