1.) A.) The goal of an LCA must be clearly stated. ISO requires that the goal statement should include clear statements about four things, the intended application, the reasons for carrying out the study, the audience, and whether the results will be released publicly.
The statements, "The goal of this study is to find the energy use of making ice cream." and "The goal of this study is to produce an LCA for internal purposes." Are clear and simple but does not address all of the four things mentioned above. These statements inly mention about the intended application of the goal and does not include the reasons for carrying out the study, the audience and if it is planned for public release. The goal statement "This study seeks to do a life cycle assessment of a computer to be used for future design efforts." is also incomplete as it only mentions the intended application and the reason for carrying out the study. Although, both the techniques have a common objective, but they differ fundamentally from each other. The major difference between EIA and LCA is that EIA is a mechanism used for conducting assessments, whereas LCA is precise method used for environmental analysis.
LCA is applied to all the stages of a product's life cycle from raw materials, processing, manufacture, distribution, use, repair and maintenance. It quantifies and evaluates the environmental performance of each life cycle stage and provides feedback to assist decision makers.
EIA is a tool for planning and decision-making. EIA identifies, predicts, and evaluates the foreseeable environmental consequences of development projects. It tells the decision makers about the environmental consequences of implementing a proposed project.
