Question
Felicia Walton, a sales manager, recently earned a promotion to Director of Sales for ABC, Incorporated. Because she was promoted, you now have to fill her former position. Your team has decided to hire from within for this opening. The posted qualifications for sales manager are the following:
A bachelor’s degree in business or management.
A minimum of two years experience in sales.
Good performance evaluations over the past 12 months (minimum score of 4.5)
Three applicants have shown an interest in this opening:
Jered Weaver is a 25 year old white male. He came to work for ABC straight out of college, with a bachelor’s degree in Management. He works in the Sales department. He is well-liked within the company. Felicia has rated him at a 4.8 average over the past year. He has been with ABC for three years.
Nancy Davis is a 42 year old white female. She began working for ABC after her children began elementary school. She earned her Master’s degree in Business Administration by taking classes at night. She works in the Manufacturing department, but she believes she could be more successful in the Sales department. She feels that her outgoing and energetic personality would be a better fit in a different department. Her supervisor, Steve Poindexter, has rated her at a solid 4.4 for the past year. She has worked for ABC for seven years.
Bryce Wilson is a 28 year old African American male. Bryce completed a one-year internship at ABC when he was still in high school. He served in the military for three years, before going back to college to earn his Bachelor’s in Marketing and Sales. After completing his degree a year ago, he began working again at ABC in the Sales department. He scored below 4.5 on his first evaluation (which was given by Kay Emge), but he has steadily improved to the point where his average for the past year is exactly 4.5.
1. Based on the information that you have about each applicant, who would you hire and why?
2. What potential issues can you identify with the listed qualifications for this job position? What changes (if any) would you make, and why?
Explanation / Answer
1. I would hire Jered Weaver because I believe that the requirements defined are being fulfilled by him quite effectively and he is young and energetic, I believe he will be a fit in the department and his experience in sales will also help him in the cause.
2. The primary issue with such listed qualification is that the number of employees eligible will be very less and it would tough to sample individuals and gmhave a discussion with more and more employees. This may actually reject some very high performers in the field of sales.
