Well, it really isn't a fight but more of an argument. Well, it reallyisn't an argument but more of a discussion. Okay, you were eavesdropping but for good reason. At the nearby table sits Charles (Chuck) Berger and EricEisenberg. Chuck tells Eric that people communicate to reduce uncertainty (or manage it) while Eric tells Chuck that people have a need to be strategically ambiguous when communicating. Your job is to resolve the issue by (1) using evidence and reasoning to show that you understand both theories while (2) offering your perspective of what makes the most sense based on the two theories, and (3) provide a real example from your life experiences that proves that your perspective is highly effective Strategic Ambiguity Uncertainty Reduction Show LessA Start ThreadExplanation / Answer
1) The guys here are talking about uncertainity reduction theory and strategic ambiguity. The uncertainity reduction theory states that people, before starting actual conversation or communication, communicate with each other to reduce uncertainity about the person they are talking to. People do this, to know the person in front better, undestand the mindset, culture, behavor etc., in order to build future relationships.
Strategic ambiguity is a type of communication, where you speak up a statement, which is neither very specific, nor very vague, for example, a company describing its missions and goals usually uses this kind of communication, and because ambiguity is created, they have a lot of ground to play and change their styles of work or anything.
2) Going by the two theories, we can say that neither is perfectly right, nor perfectly wrong. The way people communicate, both type of communication is used. Usually where people are involved personally, say friends, family or relatives, and things are personal, people try to be as less uncertain as possible, because high uncertainity in this case can be damaging. On the other hand, say in a corporate meeting, setting up project goals etc, or say negotiating a contract, people try to be ambiguous, because personal relations are not involved, and the main motive here is a materialistic win. Hence, we can say that ambiguity should be used, if you are looking for materialistic gains in your life, and uncertainity reducing can be used, if you want personal relations to be good, or say looking for something which your soul and heart like.
3) Talking of a real life example, in childhood, when you went to school, and had to make new friends, you had to reduce uncertainity, so that both of you can know each other in and out, and become the best of friends. After few years, when you started your job, and met people from corporate world, you had to show ambiguity, as you did not want them to know a lot about you inside out.
