Question

Let's say, just like our given prompt, you are down to the final candidate that you want to hire. The candidate interviewed extremely well, their resume was fantastic, and they passed all of your assessments. You present an offer to the candidate and the candidate accepts. A couple weeks goes by and the candidate begins their first day. After 6 weeks into the job, you have to let the employee go because they are not meeting expectations.

How do we weed out candidates like this, whom interview extremely well and their resume reads the job description word for word, yet, they?are poor performers. Is there a way to truly detect this prior to hiring??

Explanation / Answer

It may not be possible to weed out entirely the cases of defective hiring through the interview process alone. Interview as a recruiting tool has got a pretty low predictive power and it is possible for a prospective employee to perform well in the interview through good preparation and homework and also modulate his resume to fit the job description thus reducing the efficacy of the hiring process. To prevent such happenings, it is essential to have a robust reference process, wherein information regarding the performance of the candidate in earlier jobs is gathered and analysed through reference to qualify his performance in the interview.

Another elaborate process is to employ hiring techniques which are called assessment centres, which are more exhaustive evaluation tools but have far greater predictive power for job performance and can evaluate and assess the competencies in far greater holistic manner to prevent any potential hiring misfits.
