The Behavioral Revolution and a Theoretically Diverse World

Pershing, Sandra P., and Austin, E.K. (2015). Organization Theory and Governance in the 21st Century. Los Angeles, CA: Sage/CQ Press. [ISBN: 978-1-6042-6984-0]

1. What impact do you think the inclusion or exclusion of Argyris' ideas (see P&A, p. 67) has on organizational performance or on the experience of staff members? Be. specific.

2. How does the notion of Simon's "bounded rationality" impact your expectation of behavior within public organizations? Explain.

3. If you were a manager in a large public organization, which ideas (from P&A Chapters 3 and 4) from this broad set of behaviorist approaches would be most appealing? Why? How would you incorporate these concepts into your work?

Explanation / Answer

1. Chris Argyri's management theory :

* this theory focuses on what is required in real world of organizational management.

* unlike single looping where the questions are based on symptoms / assumptions / any other non specific thoughts , The process of double looping where question directly on respective parties / underlying reasons / any other specific medium required.

* The theory guides any organisation to follow few common sense points via which performance efficiency of any organisation improves. They are as follows :

? active participation of employees in discussions instead of passing passive comments on what is not Wright in organisation.

? independent responsibility to be borne by every employee to the extent of their piece of work.

? The employer as well as employee should have a minimum communication pattern such that deep interested sectors of employee is known to employer and try to set him in that specific area where his efficiency increases along with effective results.

* Always to the extent possible long-term perspective based decisions are to be taken such that company had to not face specific immature decisions impact.

These kind of minute changes in organisations on following argyri's management theory creates a lot of progressive impact on organisation as a whole.

2. Rationality denotes the style of behaviour related to achieve appropriate goals.

Theories of rational behaviour May prescribe how an organization has to behave inorder to achieve certain goals under certain conditions.

Or it may purport how a kind of people / organization behave.

Thus the notion of this theory is that the organisational pattern of any individual in an organization / organization as a whole cannot perform to optimum level every then and now due to various kinds of limitations called cognitive limits.

These are very commonly encountered limitations which form part of day to day life. Eg : time limit , due date etc.

Thus a employee working / any organization performing is expected to work " sarisfactorily ". That means a reasonable efficiency required to perform the task.

Thus the same applies to public sector undertaking. To expect an employee to work sarisfactorily.

3. If it is my own public organization / specific undertaking where iam the sole and whole decision maker then i would use both the concepts viz : argyris theory and bounded rationality.

Thus while formulation of policies / strategies for internal working procedures of organisation i would frame the rules in such a way that

? each employee will get opportunity to work for companies dreams along with his own dreams by allocation of policies like a checklist of

* works performed by employee out if deep interest and no self interest.

* ranking of these works by respective allotted representative.

Now future work assignments are given to employee based on his specific ratings. This let know both employer and employee that higher ranks obtained when interest adds with hardwork.

Thus when rules in the first place are formed at adequate level then cooperation of the same from employees to the extent satisfactory will be enough to fulfil undertaking goals.
