Thanks for the question.
Answer:-
Let us take IBM as our organization. The company does not have a particular mission, but it aims at satisfying its clients with best technology solutions, to improve the business processes. IBM provides consultancy and solutions to clients.
Process- Delivery of computers to retail stores
Problems- Computers get damaged mid-way, delays in delivery- reasons are unidentified, there can be pilferage of material as well.
Earlier process-
The computers are loaded into the truck
The truck carrier is given receipt of the goods, the quantity, model numbers etc.
The receptor of goods is conveyed info that the truck has been dispatched for delivery
The company in the mid-way has no information if the goods are in correct position, or damaged, is delivery being on time or not.
New process-
The computers are fixed with RFID tags
The RFID chips are turned on, and then computers are loaded into the trucks
The receipt of goods is auto generated with the help of RFID scanners, which scan all the RFIDs automatically generate the bills.
The info is also sent to the receptor
Mid-way, there is continuous flow of info between sender, the truck driver and receiver regarding the goods.
Goods are easily tracked during the entire path, any delay, the sender can communicate straightaway with the driver regarding the issues.
Acknowledgement of receiving the goods is done quickly.
How the process is better than the earlier one
There is information flow continuously regarding the position of goods
Any damages can straight-away be reported
Truck drivers cannot take untimely rests, and pass them off as delay due to traffic
The delivery will be on time
The delivery staff will become more responsible for the goods
The chance of losses due to pilferage will be reduced highly.
How is the process automated-
1.Computer hardware- RFID tags, RFID scanners are hardware devices used to automate the process
2. Software- RFID monitoring systems, GPS tracking softwares, automated billing softwares would be required
3. Database- Databases would store info coming from RFID tags, bills, GPS trackers continuously.
4. Network – A network of Hardware-people-software would be setup.
5. People- People in the network would be sender-driver and delivery staff- receiver.
Changes in roles and responsibilities-
Truck loader-
Earlier- Load the trucks with the goods
Now- Load after scanning all the goods through RFID scanner
Skills required- Basic hardware handling skills would be required
2. Sender-
Earlier- Prepare the bill and the receipt to be sent along with the truck to the reciver
Now- monitor the loading, the bill is auto –generated, check the bill once manually
Skills- basic software handling skills required
3. Driver
Earlier – Deliver the goods on time, but no duty to report mid-way
Now- Is kept a continuous eye on by sender staff, has to be efficient in delivery.
Skills- No such additional skills
4. Delivery staff
Earlier- Handle goods with care, give receipts to reciever, take receiving
Now- Handle goods and RFID tags with care, no need to give hard bills to the receiver, as billing is now totally automated.
Skills- Should know to handle RFID tags as a hardware, and should be aware of precautions that are needed to be taken for them.
