Question

Using the information provided above, please answer the following questions.

1. Which step is the bottleneck for standard patients in the Lakeside ED?

Which step is the bottleneck for custom patients in the Lakeside ED?

2. Based on the bottleneck chosen in the question above, how many standard patients can the ED process each hour?

How many custom patients can the ED process each hour?

3. If 60% of the patients are standard and 40% are custom, what is the average capacity of the ED in patients per hour?

4. Where would you expect standard patients to experience waiting lines, assuming that new customers are always entering and that no custom patients are in in the ED? You may choose more than one task.

A1

Explanation / Answer

1) Step A4 takes longer time of the two steps (A3, A4). Therefore, it is the bottleneck for standard patients

Based on the bottleneck, ED can process standard patients = 60/15 = 4 patients per hour

2) Step A5 takes longer time of the three steps (A5, A6, A7).

Based on the bottleneck (A5), capacity of processing custom patients = 60/20 = 3 patients per hour

3) Capacity based on standard patients = 4/60% = 6.7

Capacity based on customer patients = 3/40% = 7.5

Average capacity of ED = 6.7 patients per hour

4) The waiting lines of Standard patients would be at steps A2, A3, A4

5) The waiting lines of Customer patients would be at steps A2 and A6.
