Question

Create a one-page (250-word) memo interpreting the perspectives of the act nonconsequentialist, the act utilitarian, the rule nonconsequentialist, and the rule utilitarian

Read the scenario:

As Vice President of Finance of the Jameston Organization, you were asked to put together a financial summary by the President of the organization, James Jameston. At the board of directors meeting, Mr. Jameston presents the financial summary to the board members, but Mr. Jameston's presentation to the board differs from the financial summary you prepared for him. These differences make Mr. Jameston look better, but his choices could endanger the long-term health of the organization.

As the meeting ends, Mr. Jameston catches you at the door and asks you to send out a follow-up memo confirming the information he has presented. He would like the memo on his desk within the next two hours.

Step 2

Create four memo responses.

In response to Mr. Jameston's request, prepare a one-page memo. The memo should describe to Mr. Jameston the four different ways you could respond to his request using the perspectives of the act nonconsequentialist, act utilitarian, rule nonconsequentialist, and rule utilitarian.

Use a memo template or create a memo template that includes the fields To:, From:, CC:, Date:, Re:.

In the To: field, address the memo to Mr. Jameston.

In the From: field, use your name.

In the CC: field, copy any parties you believe should receive the memo, in addition to Mr. Jameston, if applicable.

Use today's date in the Date: field.

In the Re: field, create a title for your response.

In the memo, explain the responses you could make to Mr. Jameston's confirmation of information request from the perspective of the consequentialists' and nonconsequentialists' approaches listed above.

Make sure Mr. Jameston understands the reasons for your responses by summarizing the differences between act and rule consequentialist and act and rule nonconsequentialst ethical theories.

Re: The perspectives and approach for preparing the financial summary presented to the Board of Directors.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As discussed in today’s meeting where you presented the financial summary of our organization Jamestown at the board of directors meeting, I found it different from the actual organization summary and I thought of sharing the four perspectives in which I can share the summary of the meeting.

I would like to discuss the four approaches to present the facts shared by you namely the act non-consequentialist, act utilitarian, rule non-consequentialist, and rule utilitarian and I would also like to highlight the differences between act and rule consequentialist and act and rule in-consequentialist ethical theories in making the memo for circulation.

“The act nonconsequentialist is a normative ethical theory, it denies the rightness and wrongness of our conduct are determined solely by the goodness or badness of the consequences of our act or of the rules to which the act conforms.”

“The act utilitarian states a person is morally right if the act produces at least as much goodwill and positivity as any other act a person can perform at that time.”

“The rule utilitarian states the action is right as it conforms to the rule which delivers the greatest good.”

“The rule consequentialist states there are and can be no rules based on morality and consequences don’t matter.”

I would like to highlight the differences between act and rule consequentialist are as follows:

Difference between act and rule nonconsequentialist are as follows:

“The act non consequentialist states that the consequences are not the only thing that determines the moral rightness or wrongness of an act or the rule. It also states that consequences being same one act might be wrong and other might be right.”

I look forward to your revert to prepare the brief for circulation to the board members.

Thanking you,

Regards,

Mr. XYZ
