Question

CanAir and TravelAge Elvit, who works for CanAirLtd. and Cinby, who works for TravelAge Ltd, are employed as production managers. Last night, both of them attended a staff development meeting organized by Production Management Institute, a professional body, of which they are members. During the coffee break, Elvit and Cinby discussed the various leadership styles that they were following in their respective organizations. Cinby told Elvit that
she was newly appointed to the role, and was relatively inexperienced. She pointed out that she manages a team of forty workers, grouped into project teams with highly skilled and experienced staff in each team. Cinby mentioned that her predecessor was unpopular with the workforce since he adopted an autocratic style of leadership. At one stage, the Labour Relations Agency were asked to mediate in a dispute regarding management/employee relations in which staff felt stifled and de-motivated that led to low productivity. In view of this, she had been thinking of adopting a democratic leadership style. Elvit told Cinby that he had a friendly personality and was optimistic that he will get on well with the workers in the company that he is employed. He went on to say that a total of fifty workers are employed, with 40 of them having been employed with the business for over 20 years. The others, mostly unskilled, tend to be younger workers who stay for a year or so and then move on elsewhere. Elvit thinks that the latter group are harder to motivate. Elvit is aware that new Health & Safety regulations are due to be implemented and this will require discipline in the workforce. He is thinking of adopting a more autocratic leadership style.

You are required to produce an essay that:
Explain the key functions of management that are essential for CanAir Limited and TravelAge
Limited and discuss the impact of managers’ leadership styles as outlined in the scenario in
motivating employees.

Explanation / Answer

the major functions of management includes:
Planning: forecasting the future and plan the activities

Organizing: pooling all the resources and arrange in a meaningful order

Directing: Enforce all the resources on one direction

Staffing: Recruit right people in right position at right time with right pay

Controlling: monitor all the resources according to plan

Reporting: One subordinate should report and answerable to one boss

Budgeting: Plan of income and expenditure for activities

In the given case CanAir and TravelAge- both the managers must focus on the above said functions.

when it comes to management and leadership styles, there are no specific or certain strategies which always provides better outcomes or results. Based on the nature of work, nature of followers, and other expectations, one shuold go with a style. For example: If the workers are lazy, do not interest to work, do not respect others, then autocratic leadership is good. If the people are more experienced, professional in nature, workholics, then democratic style is better.

In the given case, the people are more experienced, they are working for more than 20 years for the same firm. These people must involve in decision making, policy making, and they should respect well. any employee expects these as minimum requiremetns, later any additional inputs provide them more satisfaction at the work and they contribute more and more to the firm.

Hence, my suggestion is going with democratic style of leadership is better with the senior people who working for last 20 years for the firm. the remaining people will stay with the firm, when the seniors were happy and more productive.
