Why is knowledge of competitors important? How does one determine who their competitors are? You might equate it to knowing who is competing for a job so you are better prepared for an interview or presentation etc.

In many instances competitors are seen as being detrimental, that is, having fewer competitors is healthier than having many.
Can you consider situations in which having competitors can work to your benefit?

It is a common factor that one should know about their unique aspects. where they are good, where they are weak, in what area they need to improve, in what area they should polish themself- for all these the benchmark is there. when compares to others we may know our position in all the above aspects. when all these people met at one place, usually in a competition or job interview, the one who is stronger in those areas will be succeed than others. To become that one, to get succeed in the competition, it is necessary to know about the factors discussed above and get aware of those.
when the competitor is stronger, we exibit our finest talent to win the race or game. If the opposition is weak, a normal efforts may help us to win in it. For example; when you watuch a tennis game between two greatest players like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer- we come to know the feel practically. They fight like anything for each point, they never giveup till the end. The finest opposition help us to become toughest competitor in the competition. (all this information is cited with my own knowledge and experience only)
