Question

You are a 23 year old, college educated employee, having graduated 120 days prior. You have been hired by Microsuave Corporation - an industry leader in the development, manufacturing, production and distribution of computer programs that can be customized to fit each consumer's specifications. Your job is to solicit corporate clients to demonstrate your product's capabilities. Your immediate supervisor has been the leading sales agent for the previous 5 years and counting, and shows little interest in teaching you the tricks of his trade, as he is attempting to preserve his own legacy. He has a plaque on his desk that reads, "Old Age and Treachery will always defeat youth, ambition and skill." Despite being virtually independent, you commit to working long hours and utilizing multiple avenues of networking with no results. Discouragement and burnout are on the horizon for you - and are approaching very quickly. How do you engage your Human Resources contact?  What information will you reveal to him or her? What type of remedy would you like to be implemented on your behalf?

Explanation / Answer

How do you engage your Human Resources contact?

This is a very delicate matter and Human Resource might not appreciate if a young employee complains about a senior, performing individual. However, the discussion needs to be had. Instead of approaching the HR for complain one can approach HR seeking help to adjust in the role.

What information will you reveal to him or her?

When the meeting is set, discuss the issues that are cropping up at your end without implicating anyone. Then once you have established that you are facing issues mention in passing that your senior is not showing you the ropes or the tricks of the trade. Also, mention that it could be possible due to not getting proper time or a busy schedule and so on but establish that there is a gap because the senior and you are not communicating properly.

What type of remedy would you like to be implemented on your behalf?

If possible let there be a fixed weekly meeting where initially the HR or another senior member sits in so that the senior manager has to pass on the knowledge to him so that he can learn the tricks of the trade. Once the training is done then the meetings can continue but the HR or the other senior member does not need to sit in.
