Maslow’s hierarchy of needs

As per Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, you have five types of needs to be satisfied to keep you motivated which includes physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs and self actualization needs. Physiological needs may include air, food, shelter etc and as a marketing assistant, your physiological needs include your salary as salary would help you to satisfy these basic needs. The safety needs include job security and safe work environment. Social needs are satisfied by the feeling of love and belonging and a friendly work environment with good relationship your colleagues and supervisors can satisfy your social needs. Your esteem needs can be satisfied by providing rewards and recognitions for you when you achieve your sales targets. The self actualization needs can be satisfied by providing growth opportunities for you by giving more responsibilities or training that will help you to reach the managerial positions.

Herzberg's two-factor theory.

According to Herzberg's two-factor theory there are two types of factors that can affect your job satisfaction. One is hygiene factors which is essential for job satisfaction and the absence of these factors would lead to job dissatisfaction. Another is motivators, the presence of which can provide you satisfaction and motivates for giving higher performance. The hygiene factors for you can be your salary, job security and good work environment because if any of these factors are absent it will lead to job dissatisfaction. The motivators for you can be rewards, recognitions and new responsibilities and these factors would help to motivate you in work.

expectancy or equity theories of motivation

According to expectancy theory employee motivation depends on how much an individual wants a reward, the expectation that the effort will lead to expected performance and the belief that the performance would lead to reward. Individual’s expectation on outcome is referred as valence, the belief that better effort will leads to better performance is called expectancy and the expectation on a valued outcome is called instrumentality. As marketing assistant you will be motivated to perform well if you have the belief that your effort would yield the expected sales (valence), you can achieve better result if you hard work (expectancy) and you will be rewarded for the performance by the management (instrumentality).

Equity theory believes that people are motivated by fairness and if they feel inequalities they will try to adjust their input to reach the perceived equity. If you find that your colleague who achieves less sales figures is compensated more than you, you will find inequity. According to equity theory you will try to reduce your numbers by exercising less effort in work till you reach your perceived numbers that are enough to match the compensation given to you.
