Question
You have just started as general manager of a rapidly growing outbound travel company. Currently there are five franchised outlets spread across the country and there are plans to open another four in the near future. The organisation does not have a documented mission statement and you believe that capturing a mission statement in writing will benefit the management of the whole operation. However, many of the owner operators believe that a mission statement has very little benefit to their business and that they are generally a waste of time.
Provide a persuasive argument establishing the benefits, to the management team, of developing a written mission statement. Include in your argument a definition of the concepts of strategic direction and its place within the strategic management process, and applying them to the above scenario.
Explanation / Answer
A Mission Statement, irrespective of any industry or Business is inevitably important and key to having a structured and focused Business plans to be aligned to when lost track in the go.
It is the guide to any kind of decision making and providing insight to the Business operatives.
Here, in the given scenario wherein the business is so dynamic as Travel and also the company is growing and expanding, it will only be haywire and stakeholders can lead to a totally different perception as a result of their own thinking and thus take the Business to a different level altogether that might not suffice the initial goals and purpose and may also run low on profit making or incur debts. With an expansion in place, this only makes the transactions more complex and ambiguous with inclusion of more people in the process. Thereby, having a mission statement in place that can align every person taking care of the different units on the same page will be helpful to have the business up and running. Here it is more important to be guided by the mission principles, since the Business is spread all across the geography and is not confined to one particular place to be able to have all the counterparts meet in person every time. Thus it is indispensable to have a mission statement in place.
