Question

Below are four terms. Define each of them using your experience (work or personal). DO NOT give me a book definition and then an experience. I want to see that you understand the term thus you MUST integrate the experience component in defining the term.

I am not asking you to define all four in one experience, you most probably will have to come up with four different experiences to define each term. Each should be about 125 words.

-ethical issue intensity
-corporate culture (in terms of ethics)
-significant other (in terms of ethics not in general)
-moral intensity

Explanation / Answer

Ethical issue intensity deals with creating awareness regarding impact of ethics in an organisation and the issues that can be raised which can hamper the reputation of company. It involve creating awareness programs like training in an organisation. Employees are made aware of the code of ethics and other ethical behaviour congruent with the ethical culture of that country. For example, when an organisation is planning for expansion in different country all the employees who would relocate to that country needs to be given training by the concerned manager so that the employees get an idea of the intensity regarding different ethical issues.

The corporate culture of an organisation is the reflection of values and moral principles of the employees of that organisation. The driving force behind the ethical corporate culture is the leadership team and its responsibility to follow the process of organisation keeping in mind the value of integrity and honesty which has a cascading effect on its employees leading to a healthy corporate culture in that organisation. For example, when an organisation focuses on protection of environment and is included in code of ethics. And the infrastructure of the organisation is designed so as to protect the environment like having solar panels and water conservation facility and also maintaining garden space in the campus of organisation promotes the principle of environment friendliness.

Significant other
They are those who have a significant influence into the word groups and teams. The values and principles of significant other has great impact on entire team and it's organisational goal. For example if the leader of the team is himself following corrupt practices in the organisation, the team would accept it as a norm and follow the same. This would eventually lead to loss of brand value of the organisation. Hence it is important to keep an eye on the significant other.

Moral intensity
Moral intensity is framed in the employees mind with the help of perception of the harm caused by a particular decision. When collective decisions are being made the moral intensity will vary accordingly depending on values of the employees associated in decision making. For example, when a purchase order requires an approval of a manager but the manager is outstation for a business meeting then the Purchase staff may tend to duplicate the signature, in order to avoid delay in the production process. The intention is good but the act of duplicating the signature may disrupt the brand value eventually. It would also impact the other staff in the purchase department. And the moral intensity would dilute and the unethical practices would continue.
