Develop an essay of at least 500 words taking into consideration the value shifts that Glenn Holland experienced during the film. Do you feel he fulfilled his goals, or do you think he settled for less than his dreams? Relate your description of the experiences of Glen Holland to your own experiences and values upon which you have reflected. How does Glenn Holland's career path resonate with you and what do you hope to achieve at the pinnacle of your life's work?

Explanation / Answer

In the movie “Mr. Holland’s Opus” Mr. Glenn Holland is portrayed as a high-school music teacher who nurses the ambition of writing his own composition sometime in the near future and establish a name for him in the music industry.

During the movie Glenn Holland experienced value shifts while he was trying to make his dream a reality. At the start of the movie Glenn Holland displays strong family values and this can be inferred from the fact that he wanted to spend ample free and quality time with Iris (his wife). It is with this value in mind Glenn Holland took up a teaching post in John F. Kennedy High School. Glenn Holland took up this post so as to be able to give more time to his family and more time to his dream and ambition of composing his own musical piece. At this stage his values towards his professional duties as a teacher in John F. Kennedy High School was not very strong.

With the passage of time Glenn Holland experienced new things and this resulted in a shift in his values (from what has been discussed above). Firstly as a music teacher Glenn Holland feels that he is not being given the same amount of importance as other teachers (who teach academic subjects) are being given. This lack of importance and respect makes him feel unimportant and this feeling makes him change his feeling towards his profession. He now begins to pay more importance to his professional job of being a music teacher and innovates by using rock and roll to make classical music more accessible as well as more appealing to students. As he becomes more involved with his job of being a music teacher his values towards his family gets diluted. He starts giving less time to his wife Iris and to his son Cole. Moreover when Glenn Holland and his wife finds that their son is deaf the value that Glen Holland felt with regards to his family gets diluted even further as he gets angry and frustrated with the fact that his son will not be able to pursue music. His values now get deeply rooted to enhance the level of musical excellence within the school and he becomes determined in a strong way and in a manner that he had never experienced before.

Glenn Holand’s career path strongly resonates with me. I am a cook and aspire to become a Michelin star chef. I want to breakthrough in the world of food and cuisine and show the world that one can innovate and create wonderful dishes with simple and basic ingredients. In this path I often felt like Glenn Holland. I started my career on a string foot. However the industry is highly competitive and soon I felt and realized that making a name for me in this industry will be very difficult. This change in values occurred several times during my career and I kept oscillating between my professional values and my personal values. In the end I quit my ambition and let go of my dream and I am now a happy and satisfied small eatery owner with a family of my own.
