Question
Watch two television programs that are at least 30 minutes each. Make a list of every product
and/or service that is advertised. For each advertisement: Who do you think the target market is?
Does it match the target market for that show? What type of emotion (if any) did the advertisement
give you-humor, fear, etc.? Did the advertisement make you want to buy the product/service? Why
or why not? Does the ad work for the Brand (if applicable). Rate each ad on a scale of 1-5 (where 1
is the least effective and 5 is the most) as to whether you think the advertisement is successful.
Explanation / Answer
The target market of the products is closely related to the viewers of the show. For example a children's show will always feature items like toys, fast food or games, and a family soap will feature advertisements for the products like insurance policies, automobiles, household appliances etc. In every way, the advertiser succeeds in getting to the target group. Different kind of products instill different emotions in the minds of viewers. For example, a recent ad of an insurance product always creates fear of untimely death in the customers' minds, whereas a trip to Bahamas will send a newly wed couple to a world of fantasy, or a new ice cream will bring a smile to a youngster's face.
Out of the products listed above, the insurance products invoke a sense of urgency among the buyers who might imagine themselves in a hypothetical situation described on the ad. A trip to Bahamas depends on many factors including weighing with other alternatives, financial constraints, time constraints and cost benefit analysis of such a trip. An ice cream, being a low ticket decision is most likely to be purchased by the kind on his next trip to the market.
Thus, it can be seen that there are many factors that contribute to the likelihood of the success of the ad.
